About this instructor:
Dr. Steven J. Pearlman is the author of The Book of Martial Power, now published in two languages, as well as two DVDs on open-handed combatives. Dr. Pearlman’s expertise centers on universal principles of martial effectiveness, principles that can deepen the exploration and effectiveness of any style by explaining the forces that optimize its techniques. His teaching goals are to help students gain insight into the power of their own arts, as well as understand how the real forces at work transcend style, national origin, and type of technique.
Training since 1983, Dr. Pearlman has, to varying degrees, studied a range of martial arts from around the world. In 1997, Dr. Pearlman was contacted by The Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C. to coordinate and moderate the Spirit in Motion: Traditions in the Martial Arts lecture series for its associates. Dr. Pearlman has since published numerous articles on martial theory in Black Belt magazine and is a columnist for Martial Arts Expert magazine. Most recently, Dr. Pearlman was interviewed on The Self-Defense Show (2008), where he discussed his expertise on adrenaline- and stress-based defensive tactics and its relationship to principles of combat.
Also an authority on women’s self-defense, Dr. Pearlman designed and taught the country’s only full-credit course that integrated academic study of sexual assault with physical and psychological defensive tactics training. He also currently serves as the Content Director for nformd.net, an internet-based company providing sexual assault prevention education to many U.S. colleges and universities.
Dr. Pearlman is the founder of Genri-Ryu Bujutsu, which emphasizes the application of martial principles towards combative effectiveness and personal growth, and which he teaches to a select group of students. The director of The Saratoga Martial Arts Festival (SMAF), Dr. Pearlman deeply believes in its bai liu ha yi—100 styles flow into one—motto; in the final analysis, all martial artists should support one another in our exploration of the martial way.

Techniques for locking and throwing with the staff also will be explored. Dr. Pearlman does not often teach this seminar outside of his immediate students. Participants should bring a 5' or 6' staff. Some will be provided. Participants will exit this seminar with a deeper appreciation for this weapon, as well as ways to continuing training it.
Effortless Striking Power:
Rather than focusing on many sub-topics, this seminar will take participants through a deep exploration of the most common martial technique: the strike. Working from a foundation of physiokinetics and universal marital principles, Dr. Pearlman will take students through the mechanics of the punch, including forces such as rooting, spinal alignment, indirect pressure, heaviness, wave energy, counter-forcing, structural defense, and more. The result, striking that increases in power as it decreases in effort. Hit faster. Hit harder. Hit effortlessly.
